Early Childhood Education, BSE

The early childhood education major prepared high-quality teachers for instructing students in early childhood through grade 6. Students learn to implement developmentally appropriate practice and pedagogy grounded in the science of learning. Field- and clinical-based coursework provide prospective teachers with applied learning experiences in a variety of school settings. This program leads to Texas teacher certification specific to students’ selected pathway (described below) upon the successful completion of program coursework and requirements, field and clinical experiences, and state mandated exams. In alignment with the TEA certification pathways, Early Childhood Education BSE majors must choose ONE of the following options:

EC-6 Core Subjects with STR – Provides preparation for teaching core subjects [English Language Arts/Reading (ELAR), Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies] in early childhood to grade 6. Includes integrated preparation in the Science of Teaching Reading (STR).

EC-6 Core Subjects/Special Education with STR - Provides preparation for teaching core subjects [English Language Arts/Reading (ELAR), Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies] in early childhood to grade 6. This pathway focuses on inclusive practices and specially designed instruction for students with disabilities, aligned with the EC–12 Special Education Specialist certification exam as well as integrated training in the Science of Teaching Reading (STR).

EC-6 Core Subjects/ESL with STR- Provides preparation for teaching core subjects [English Language Arts/Reading (ELAR), Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies] in early childhood to grade 6. This pathway prepares candidates to support multilingual learners through understanding of language acquisition, cultural awareness and effective ESL instruction and assessment, aligned with the EC–12 ESL Supplemental certification exam as well as integrated training in the Science of Teaching Reading (STR).

EC-6 Core Subjects/Bilingual Spanish with STR- Provides preparation for teaching core subjects [English Language Arts/Reading (ELAR), Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies] in early childhood to grade 6. This pathway equips candidates with the skills to teach bilingually in English and Spanish and supporting dual-language learners across content areas. Courses in this pathway are aligned with the EC–12 Bilingual Education Spanish Supplemental certification exam and the Science of Teaching Reading (STR).
