Cosmopolitanism: Thinking from a Global Perspective
Department(s)
Long Description (Catalog Description)
In this class, students seek to understand definitions of the term cosmopolitanism in its various inflections. Students will interrogate those inflections and discuss them in association with concepts such as nationalism, humanism, globalization, global ethics, and identity. Analyzing cultural products from around the world, students will ask questions such as the following: What does it mean to be a global citizen? What role does language play in how we envision global citizenship? What does it mean to think of someone as "the other" and how is that related to one's own "otherness"? How do/can we accommodate national identities and global citizenship?
