Long Description (Catalog Description)

Prerequisites: RELI 10033, or permission of the instructor. The course explores the rich and diverse world of the ancient Jewish texts discovered in the caves near Khirbet Qumran. Known also as the Dead Sea scrolls, these texts shed light on almost every aspect of what came to be know as the Second Temple period. Yet, they proved to be particularly important for understanding the complex religious and social matrix out of which emerged nascent Christianity and Rabbinic Judaism. The course takes a closer look at this matrix by means of reading a variety of texts from Qumran.
