Prerequisites: BIOL 30603 and BIOL 30403 OR Instructor Permission. This course critically engages the historical eugenics movement in the United States and its precursors in the broader Western scientific tradition with attention to current and future advancements in biology. Students will employ a combination of scientific and ethical analysis to interrogate social/political and biological claims about inherited traits and race that were dominant in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Students will further analyze contemporary advancements in biology while applying ethical lessons from the past.
