This survey course covers the practice of slavery in the Islamic world from the time of Prophet Muhammad to the 20th century. Students will learn about not only the diverse histories of different Islamic societies from Southeast Asia to North Africa and Americas, they will also study the similarities and differences of slavery as an institution in these societies. The themes covered in the course include concubinage, slave dynasties, elite and military slavery, race and slavery, slave trade, manumission, and abolition of slavery.
