Examination of Irish history from the plantations of the seventeenth century to the conclusion of the Troubles in the twentieth century. Particular attention will be given to the era of the penal laws, the place of Ireland within the British Empire, the development of a variety of forms of Irish nationalism, the causes and consequences of the Great Irish Potato Famine, the Anglo-Irish War and the partition of the island, and the struggle for civil rights and peace in Northern Ireland. The course will also introduce theories about colonial (and postcolonial) identities in modern Ireland. (EU)
