This course examines the position, contribution, cultural representation and socio-economic status of women in the Middle East from the advent of Islam to the present with particular focus on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. By tracing women's legal status, sexuality, public morality, family and social life, and female economic and political participation, this course seeks to shed light on the history of women in predominantly Muslin societies.
