How has the Middle East changed across the modern period? What are the main political, cultural, and socioeconomic forces¿both local and global¿that shaped this highly diverse region of the world? This course surveys key developments in the history of the modern Middle East and North Africa, including the spread of new political ideologies and cultural trends in the Ottoman and Persian Empires, the emergence of modern nation states, European imperialism, twentieth-century decolonization movements, and twenty-first century socioeconomic and geopolitical shifts and conflicts.
