This course examines the most significant examples of the failure of nineteenth-century liberalism in Europe: the rise in the twentieth century of Stalin's Soviet Union, Hitler's Nazi Germany and Mussolini's Fascist Italy. Topics include a comparative analysis of their ideologies, their leaders' seizure of power, the initiatives and policies implemented at home and abroad, as well as the collapse of the Nazi and Fascist regimes and the survival of Stalin's Soviet system at least until his death.
