A survey of the revolutionary developments in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries which brought the development of parliamentary government, social and political reform movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the transformation from Empire to Commonwealth, and the emergence of the welfare state. Britain's role as a world power will be examined and special emphasis will be given to the diplomatic developments that led to the two world wars. (EU)
